FAQ section

How much does it cost to have someone install peel and stick wallpaper in NYC?

Typically we install peel and stick wallpaper for about $3 per sq ft; this would be the labor element. We do have a minimum of $200 for smaller jobs for instance with accent walls. Additionally, you would need to consider the cost of the wallpaper itself and need to measure the wall space to assess what the cost of the wallpaper will be. You will need about 15% extra paper given the need to pattern match the paper.

Where can I find peel and stick wallpaper to install in NYC?

We see people buying peel and stick wallpaper from several different platforms online including Amazon, Etsy, Wayfair, Tempaper along with other companies. Typically the papers are cheaper on Amazon, but you would need to be careful and check the reviews for issues with adhesion as some papers are not robust enough to stay on the wall.

Can I install peel and stick wallpaper myself in NYC?

Yes you can certainly try to install peel and stick wallpaper yourself. We have instructional material on how to do so and can provide some tips. However, admittedly if you don't have time to set aside to learn and understand the proper techniques for installing, we would suggest hiring a professional. as it can be frustrating to install the paper without the time to understand the right process. We have seen several examples of renters trying to install themselves but run into problems (for instance, wrinkles in the paper, difficulty matching the pattern) and they end up needing to call a professional. But learning how to do any handy skill is possible.

Is peel and stick worth it and how long does it last?

Some peel and stick wallpaper is great and simple for a new accent wall in an apartment. However, you'll need to assess the quality of the paper and consider putting up a sample to see how it looks. Can peel and stick last a long time? Yes undoubtedly, and it can be very easy to repair if there are any scuff marks. Most peel and stick wallpaper is affordable and if you keep some extra paper after an install, it can be used for patching in case there is any damage in the future.

What are the common mistakes of installing peel and stick wallpaper?

Be sure your walls haven't been painted in the last 6 weeks. You do not want to prime your walls the same day or day before thinking this will make a better surface for the wallpaper. Traditionally for most wallpapers, priming the wall can be an important part of the installation, but with peel and stick wallpaper, you need time in between painting so that the part can dry and properly cure before the application of peel and stick because the paper can chemically react with the paint.

Do you need to prime before applying peel and stick wallpaper?

You may consider an oil based primer which is a good foundational primer to protect the paint layer of the wall from wallpaper. However, if you want to avoid as much wall damage as possible and use an oil based primer, you'll need to wait at least a couple weeks to be sure the paint cures fully to have a safe installation of peel and stick. If you use a latex or acrylic primer, you'll need to wait at least 4 weeks. Some other types of paint, for instance, semi-gloss, requires at least 6 weeks to cure properly.

Is it cheaper to paint than to install peel and stick?

Painting can certainly be cheaper than applying peel and stick wallpaper. However, painting wouldn't have the same kind of patterns or intrigue that potentially wallpaper would have. Paint is typically only 45 to 60 per gallon and you'd need potentially only one or two gallons to cover a room. Secondly the labor is typically cheaper for interior painting.
